Dear Applicant:

Within the context of the Astronaut Recruitment Campaign, we made a first sorting in the 5351 applications we received. Following the information you provided, the pre-selection committee is pleased to inform you that further consideration is being given to your candidacy.

Therefore, for the continuation of the recruitment process, we will require additional information. We ask you to complete the second electronic form that will be available on our website on Wednesday, July 9th 2008 at 8:00 Eastern daylight time (UTC - 4:00) at the following address:
https://f2.space.gc.ca

You have until Monday, July 28th 2008 at 18:00 Pacific daylight time (UTC - 7:00) to complete your online application. It is in your best interest and your responsibility to answer all questions as best and completely as possible.

If you do not answer in the foretold delays to these demands, we will consider that you voluntarily withdrew your candidacy from the present selection process.

The pre-selection committee will review all candidacies and will identify high-ranking candidates for the astronaut's position. The results of this second sorting will begin to be disclosed by wave, from August to September. The selected candidates will be invited in September to interviews that will be held in October 2008.

In order to help you prepare all the necessary information, you will find on this page a summary of the information you will be required to provide in the second electronic form available July 9th:

i am legend?

i watched it
and will smith did a good job acting
but, based on a spoiler-reading of wikipedia
i thought that it was gonna be about a dude who was the titular "legend"
because he went around killing the vampire people in the daytime when they slept,
and so the vampires made him into a legendary "booger man"
but um
that's not how it ended
which kind of dissapointed me
because the booger man ending woulda been really thought provoking

life is like a dinosaur comic

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2206749/Boy-with-OCD-thought-he-caused-911-terrorist-attacks.html

Somehow a combination of hilarious, tragic, heartbreaking and interesting.
a little boy with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder blames himself for the 9/11 terrorist attacks
because on that day
he forgot to touch the white spot on the road.

Three things meme

Well I handed my draft to the committee, I gave my departmental colloquium, and now just revisions and edits and studying and a few research tasks until my defense in a week and a bit.

So here is that interesting three unique things meme!

Post 3 things you’ve done in your lifetime that you don’t think anybody else on your friends list has done.
See if anybody else responds with “I’ve done that.” If they have, you need to add another! (2.b., 2.c., etc…)

1) Taught English to schoolkids (and teachers) in Thailand and Laos.

2) Written BASIC code on a Tandy laptop.
2 b) Let's try... Eaten live wiggling larvae. Possibly silkworm.
2 c) Had open chest surgery?

3) Spent 10 days without speaking to the people around me. (Meditation retreat).

(I wanted to put "sewn my own wedding dress" but I know at least one person on my friendslist has also).

hilarious CBC

oh man,
on the current... (or some radio thing in the current's spot called "between you and me" it's podcast!) today there was this thing about teaching kids about sex
and it was trying to be fun and hip and stuff
but it was pretty stressful and annoying and embarrassing
hey! lets listen to teenagers tell us their opinions!
guh.

anyway, at the end, I laughed.
the main interviewer lady's teenage son picked up the microphone
and tries to turn the embarrassment tables on his mom by asking her all sorts of questions
which boil down to "why are you making such a big deal about this, i already know this jeez"

so after a little of that, the mom starts hitting back and points out that he was the one who brought the subject up at the dinner table by telling everyone that his 10 year old sister wanted to know what necrophelia was. and then...

"which one of you was looking up on the internet information about 'the worlds biggest bum'?"

the teenager heartily denied it... heheheheh.
hehe.

in other news, i'm training and dieting hard, and seem to be okay living on a reduced calorie diet. I'm not that hungry anymore. Gotta be an astronaut.

also, i'm in the middle of writing a paper based on the theorem i hacked together when i was at conferences. and also yesterday i went fishing and almost caught a very cute trout.

And here I was, thinking today would be boring

I want to thank the RIAA. I was anticipating a boring day, and yet they give me so much.

From Wired: Recording Industry Decries AM-FM Broadcasting as 'A Form of Piracy'
The recording industry and U.S. radio companies have squared off for decades about whether AM and FM radio broadcasters should pay royalties to singers, musicians and their labels. But now the debate is getting meaner; there's more at stake as the recording industry seeks new income avenues in the wake of wanton peer-to-peer piracy and declining CD sales in part due to the iPod and satellite radio. A U.S. House subcommittee could vote as early as Thursday on a royalty measure.

It's like the gift that keeps on giving. Thanks for the lolz, RIAA.
